Appointment or Drop-In?

Students often ask whether they should set a weekly tutoring appointment or drop in, so here
are some simple guidelines:

  • Is tutoring a mandatory part of your course (as it is for most Writing Composition
classes)? If so, then you should set that weekly appointment time.
  • Does the course have a pass/fail test at the end? If this is the case, the weekly
enforcement of skills can help you pass that test.
  • Is the subject area one that you find especially challenging or a core course you have
had difficulty with in the past? Weekly assistance is more suited to these situations
because you can build on the knowledge of the previous week’s classes and tutorial
before moving forward to the next assignment.
  • Do you only need assistance with specific chapters, skills, or concepts in a course? If this
is the case, it is better to drop in when those areas of the course are discussed.
Are you grasping course concepts but need some help when certain large projects or
research assignments are due? Dropping in for assistance would work for you in this
    case.
  • Do you need only to review before tests? Perfect for drop-in assistance!

You may find in the same semester some courses where you want the weekly appointment and
some where you only need to drop in. Take advantage of Learning Support for both.
