The Importance of Racial Diversity on College Campuses

June 29, 2023

Good afternoon,

Despite the Supreme Court’s longtime recognition that racial diversity on college campuses is an important facet of higher education, today it decided to reverse affirmative action, a troubling decision for colleges and universities across our nation. Saint Peter’s long ago removed the barriers to admission for BIPOC students. I recognize that not all institutions have done so and therefore we are saddened by the Supreme Court’s decision.

We will continue to welcome first-generation students from a variety of backgrounds to our campus. We stand in the shadow of Lady Liberty here in Jersey City. It is our calling to provide opportunities for those seeking a higher education, regardless of origin. And to build and maintain a community that is diverse in culture and lived experiences enriches our campus, city, state and nation.

As an institution of higher education, we are inspired by our Jesuit, Catholic identity, commitment to individual attention and grounding in the liberal arts. We always have and always will educate a diverse community of learners to excel intellectually, lead ethically, serve compassionately and promote justice in our ever-changing urban and global environment.

A diverse community is crucial as it exposes students to a variety of cultures both in the classroom and out. It creates a prolific learning environment, enabling progress and growth to be achieved among students, faculty and staff.

Studies show that diversity creates an environment conducive to critical thinking and understanding of and empathy towards those of a different background. As alumni, students then go on to be leaders that contribute to society in meaningful ways.

Saint Peter’s does not make its admission decisions based on one factor of an applicant. We are holistic in our approach, reviewing a wide range of personal factors as we decide who will take the fullest advantage of what the University has to offer and in turn, use what they have learned during their time at Saint Peter’s to benefit society as a whole.

The University’s DEI commitment statement pledges to “incorporate understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice in teaching, research, critical learning opportunities, scholarship and co-curricular activities.” As a community, let us reaffirm our commitment to the inherent value of a diverse community as well as to our ongoing efforts to ensure social justice and equal opportunity for all.

Sincerely,

Eugene J. Cornacchia
