Office of the President

A Message from the President

August 23, 2023

Good morning,

As I announced to employees at this morning’s annual Fall Semester Kickoff, after much reflection and discernment, I have made the decision to retire at the end of my current contract, which concludes on June 30, 2024. This is a bittersweet moment for me but I look forward to starting a new chapter in my life, spending more time with my family and pursuing personal interests.

Together, we have accomplished many of the goals I set out to achieve for the University when I began my presidency in 2007. I could not be more proud of our achievements, nor more grateful for all of you.

Saint Peter’s is a very special place. Everyone works tirelessly to ensure our students can live, learn and develop in a challenging and nurturing environment. And we do this amid a wonderfully diverse and inclusive community. I have seen many students enter Saint Peter’s unsure of themselves, not knowing what was possible or how they fit into this unfamiliar world of higher education, only to blossom and achieve more than they could ever imagine. Students – you are the cornerstone of this institution and are the reason why we do what we do. Your passion, determination and drive never cease to amaze me.

As a new faculty member in 1981, I never could have imagined having the opportunity to lead this great institution as president. I will forever be thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the University‘s progress. I am grateful to all of you for the kindness, understanding and support you have shown me, and for your collaboration on so many important initiatives. My pride in Saint Peter’s has never been stronger and my love for Saint Peter’s will never waver.

There have been many milestones in the history of Saint Peter’s University. I eagerly look forward to celebrating more in my final year of presidency, beginning with welcoming what looks to be the largest first-year class in recent history and participating in the many planned activities in recognition of the 25th anniversary of being designated a Hispanic Serving Institution.

The University’s Board of Trustees, led by Chair Kenneth Moore, CFA ’91, will launch a comprehensive search for the next president and is committed to finding the best candidate to lead the University moving forward. Chairman Moore will communicate via email to the campus community with information on the next steps and process.

We still have a full academic year to collaborate on our important work but I’d like to express my deep appreciation for your support as I begin my 17th academic year as president, and for the passion, dedication and talent each of you brings to our campus. It continues to be a privilege and an honor to serve the Saint Peter’s community.

We have one week to go until classes begin. I look forward to seeing everyone next week. Let’s make this year another great one!

Sincerely,

Eugene J. Cornacchia
