Saint Peter’s University Stands in Solidarity with the Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander Communities

Good afternoon,
This week we were deeply saddened to learn of a deadly shooting in Georgia, which left eight dead, including six Asian-American women. While the exact motive of the incident has yet to be determined, the loss of lives is heartbreaking. This horrific event is also unfortunately just one of the latest incidents among an alarming increase in violence, bias and harassment against Asians, Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Saint Peter’s University stands in solidarity with the Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities. Furthermore, as a Jesuit institution committed to the education of a diverse community of learners, the University is responsible for educating and fostering a dialogue about the importance of standing up against discrimination. As a country, we need to do better to stop the hate being experienced by so many around us and I do not overlook Saint Peter’s role in accomplishing that mission.
Hatred, bigotry and racism run contrary to who we are as a Jesuit institution and will not be tolerated on our campus. Last month I announced the adoption of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion statement. I encourage everyone to review it if you have not already. As a University we will not lose sight of this priority; we will ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion efforts are at the forefront of every single thing we do.
I understand the serious impact that these recent incidents can have on the members of our community. I want to share a reminder that resources are available to those who need it with Counseling and Psychological Services(CAPS) or the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Together, let us stand together in solidarity with our Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander classmates, professors, co-workers, family, friends and members of the community and denounce these hateful acts.
