Students work with Jersey City Together to Bring Change

Last fall, M.P.A. students in Professor Frank McMillan’s “Community Organizing” class worked with Jersey City Together (a broad-based coalition of more than 30 religious congregations and nonprofits) to conduct research and knock on doors at buildings owned by River Edge Management (recently renamed Trendy Management). The students built relationships with tenants and they cataloged health and sanitation problems such as mold and a lack of heat.

Thanks to the students and other volunteer leaders, Jersey City Together launched a campaign to hold River Edge / Trendy Management accountable. As a result, the city has already identified more than 100 housing code and other violations in just two buildings, with the city continuing to inspect the company’s apartment buildings.
