DR. James Giordano, renowned national expert in Palliative Medicine, addresses awardees at SPC’S Michaelmas Convocation

Jersey City, NJ – Ten Saint Peter’s College students with the highest grade point averages in the senior class were recognized on September 19 at the College’s annual Michaelmas Convocation.  The students were inducted into the Most Noble Order of the Peacock, the College’s oldest and most prestigious honor society.  The ceremony followed the medieval tradition of convening the faculty and students to start the term and is celebrated in honor of the feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Dr. James Giordano, Scholar in Residence at the Center for Clinical Bioethics, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Palliative Medicine, in the Department of Medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center, delivered the convocation address. A 1981 graduate of Saint Peter’s College, Dr. Giordano urged award winners to seek, in the Jesuit tradition, virtue in their academic and future endeavors.

Dr. Giordano received a Ph.D. in biological psychology from the City University of New York, completed a post-doctoral fellowship in neuroscience and neuropathology at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore MD, and graduate training in ethics at the Neiswanger Institute of Bioethics and Health Policy of Loyola University, Chicago, IL.

Dr. Giordano’s research has focused upon neurochemical and anatomical substrates of neuropathic pain, and clinical applications of the development and implementation of analgesic drugs and novel technologies. His current work addresses the neuroethics of pain, suffering and sentience, and examines how new developments in neuroscience inform and sustain an evolving philosophy of mind and medicine.
