Jersey City, NJ (October7, 2003) — Six students in the Saint Peter’s College Political Science department will join a national debate program about United States foreign policy when they debate on Thursday, October 9 at11 a.m. in Pope Lecture Hall. Saint Peter’s is one of numerous colleges and universities nationwide joining “The People Speak: America Debates Its Role In The World.” The Saint Peter’s students will discuss the use of preemptive military force to thwart threats posed by hostile nations and terrorist activity. The People Speak is an initiative sponsored by 11 national organizations including the United Nations Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund and League of Women Voters which hopes to promote citizen discussion through local debates between October 5-18. “It is wonderful that the students of Saint Peter’s College have taken the lead in what will be a national conversation about U.S. foreign policy,” said Political Science Professor Dr. Anna Brown who helped organize the event for the College’s Social Justice program. “At a time when justice and peace in our world are being questioned and threatened, it is hopeful to see young people who take and engage seriously in the art of politics.” Alain Sanders, a member of the College’s Political Science Department will moderate the event. He covered the Middle East during a 21-year career as a reporter at TIME Magazine before joining the College’s faculty. “As America prepares to enter another presidential election season, once again foreign policy issues are pressing in on the nation’s domestic agenda,” Sanders said. “The People Speak Program is a wonderful opportunity to get American citizens to think and talk about some very critical national security questions raised by 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq. We in the Saint Peter’s College community are proud and eager to be participating in the dialogue.” The audience will be invited to participate in the debate by asking questions of the student presenters.
