Jersey City Street to be Named “Peacock Way” to Honor Saint Peter’s Enduring Presence in the City

Jersey City, N.J. – October 2, 2023 – Saint Peter’s University is proud to announce that the Municipal Council of the City of Jersey City will officially designate Glenwood Avenue, from John F. Kennedy Boulevard to West Side Avenue, as “Peacock Way.” This commemoratory designation honors the enduring legacy of Saint Peter’s University, its remarkable contributions to the City and the historic NCAA run of the men’s basketball team to the Elite Eight, which captured the “attention and hearts of the entire City.” An unveiling ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 4 at 12:30 p.m. on the corner of Glenwood Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

According to the ordinance, “bestowing the moniker Peacock Way on this portion of Glenwood Avenue is a fitting way to recognize Saint Peter’s enduring active presence in Jersey City.” The ordinance states that “for over 150 years Saint Peter’s has provided academic and athletic excellence, religious services and community partnerships.”

“The Saint Peter’s community is thrilled with the Council’s decision to designate a street within our open campus in honor of our Peacocks,” said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s University. “This recognition marks a significant milestone in the University’s more than 150-year history and it highlights the profound interconnection between Saint Peter’s and this vibrant community we call home. In many ways, Saint Peter’s history is Jersey City’s history and we look forward to continuing our shared journey of growth, transformation and mutual support.”

All members of the community are invited to attend the unveiling ceremony, which will include remarks from Dr. Cornacchia, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop H ’14, Council President Joyce Watterman and Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey.

“The dedication of Peacock Way is a fitting tribute to all they ways Saint Peter’s University has contributed to the City of Jersey City,” said Councilwoman Prinz-Arey. “We look forward to continuing our partnership to improve our neighborhoods and communities.”
