Saint Peter’s University is Recognized Nationally for Environmental Sustainability

Jersey City, N.J. – August 8, 2023 –Saint Peter’s University is proud to announce that it was recognized by the Catholic Climate Covenant in the organization’s first U.S. Laudato Si’ Champions Awards. The Laudato Si’ Champions Awards recognize institutions across the United States that have made outstanding achievements in environmental sustainability and stewardship.

“The Saint Peter’s community is honored to be recognized in the inaugural U.S. Laudato Si’ Champions Awards,” said Eileen Poiani, Ph.D., chair of the Sustainability Council at Saint Peter’s University. “This award is a testament to the outstanding efforts of the University’s Sustainability Council, which shepherds our sustainability efforts, and to all in our community who have active roles in a variety of sustainable practices.”

Catholic Climate Covenant is a national non-profit dedicated to inspiring and equipping U.S. Catholics to take greater climate action. For the U.S. Laudato Si’ Champions Awards, the organization selected winners in several categories including health care, universities, schools, organizations, religious orders, businesses, dioceses, parishes and families. Saint Peter’s was selected for an honorable mention in the University category.

“These awardees honor the spirit of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, in prayer, word and deed. Pope Francis echoes the calls of his predecessors, for all people of good will to care for our common home and embrace an ecological conversion,” said Jose Aguto, executive director of the Catholic Climate Covenant. “The winners and all honorees demonstrate remarkable leadership and commitment to the environmental challenges we face. We are blessed to recognize their inspiring achievements. They are not only protecting and changing our world but inspiring others to follow.”

Saint Peter’s University has an unwavering dedication to promoting environmental consciousness, ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental justice within its campus community and beyond. The esteemed award acknowledges the University’s commitment to exemplifying the principles of Laudato Si’ in its academic programs, campus initiatives and broader community engagement.

The Laudato Si’ Champions Awards ceremony took place virtually on July 27 at the conclusion of the 2023 Laudato Si’ and the U.S. Catholic Church Conference, which provided the opportunity for institutions, educators and students from across the country to come together and celebrate the collective impact of environmental efforts. The complete list of winners can be found in the official release from the Catholic Climate Covenant.
