Saint Peter’s Announces the Launch of the University’s Sesquicentennial Year

Jersey City, N.J. – September 10, 2021 – Saint Peter’s University today announced official plans to commemorate the institution’s Sesquicentennial year, which will officially kick off with a flag raising and launch celebration on September 15. To honor its 150-year anniversary, the University unveiled a logo, theme and website as well as plans for events to be held throughout the 2021-22 academic year. The theme for the Sesquicentennial is Opportunity for Generations, which speaks to the University’s long history of opening doors for promising, hardworking students, many of whom are the first in their families to graduate from college.

“Our theme of Opportunity for Generations honors the legacy of Saint Peter’s welcoming students from virtually every background throughout its history,” said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s University. “It also recognizes the impact of Saint Peter’s on the greater good from the accomplishments of its more than 50,000 graduates. I cannot wait to celebrate our past this year as we look forward to the future.”

The University’s Sesquicentennial logo features bold graphics and iconic imagery that utilize the keys to the kingdom of heaven given to Saint Peter as well as the Peacock mascot. This logo will be displayed prominently on campus, the website, on social media and in University publications throughout the year. It is also featured in a trailer designed to build excitement about the year-long celebration ahead.

“Sesquicentennial is a time for celebrating, reflecting and memorializing the historical significance of Saint Peter’s University,” said Virginia Bender, Ph.D., co-chair of the Sesquicentennial Commission and special assistant to the president for institutional planning/chief of staff.

“The Sesquicentennial Commission looks forward to engaging the University community and the broader community in a multitude of signature events and activities to recognize this noteworthy time and the enduring impact of Saint Peter’s for future generations,” added Eileen L. Poiani, Ph.D., co-chair of the Sesquicentennial Commission, special assistant to the president/professor of mathematics and chair of the Sustainability Council.

The Sesquicentennial coincides with the Ignatian Year (May 2021 to July 2022) that celebrates the life of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits and the 500th anniversary of his conversion. The Sesquicentennial will proudly showcase the University’s Jesuit and Catholic heritage and the transformational education it inspires.
