Saint Peter’s University Announces IBM Skills Academy Partnership

Jersey City, N.J. – July 29, 2020 – Saint Peter’s is proud to announce that the Frank J. Guarini School of Business has entered a partnership with IBM to develop an IBM Skills Academy on the University’s campus. An IBM Skills Academy is a training and certification program designed for academia, which helps university faculty provide students with additional skills to give them an advantage in the job market. IBM Skills Academy courses will be available in the fall 2020 trimester to graduate students as well as undergraduate students in accelerated programs.

“The areas of artificial intelligence, data science, enterprise design and cloud computing are becoming critically important in countless fields of study,” said Joseph Gilkey, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the business administration department and director of the M.B.A. program. “We want to ensure that Saint Peter’s graduates not only have a desirable skill set on paper, but also are educated in the latest digital technologies enabling them to innovate in their respective careers.”

Through the IBM Skills Academy, Saint Peter’s University faculty members are trained by IBM on the curriculum. Gilkey and Gulhan Bizel, Ph.D., visiting professor in the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, have completed IBM training and were the first instructors, in IBM history, ever awarded the Enterprise Design Thinking Instructor Badge. According to IBM, Enterprise Design Thinking badge earners have “acquired the skills required to gain practice in the successful application of design thinking techniques to address key industry problems. Badge earners have proficiency in the history of design thinking, iteration, user feedback, listening, storyboarding and prototyping.”

The first two classes that will be available through the IBM Skills Academy in the fall 2020 trimester include Enterprise Design Thinking and AI for Managers. In future terms, Internet of Things for Managers and Quantum Computing for Managers will be offered. Students enrolled in these courses will have the opportunity to complete a test with IBM to officially receive an IBM certification.
