Saint Peter’s University Announces Creation of Center for Leadership Studies

Jersey City, N.J. – August 29, 2018 – Saint Peter’s University today announced the creation of a Center for Leadership Studies. Recognizing that excellent leadership skills are essential in a wide array of professional fields, the Center will offer a rigorous program of academic, practical and experiential opportunities for aspiring leaders to acquire and develop their leadership skills and ability.

Saint Peter’s mission includes an imperative to develop students that “lead ethically.” Consistent with the mission of the University and its Jesuit identity, the Center will be guided in its work to develop leaders with a strong moral compass, broad world vision, sound ethical outlook and deep understanding of and appreciation for the diverse, global environment. Particular emphasis will be paid to the unique principles of leadership exemplified by Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

This Center and associated Fellows Program will be housed in the School of Business at Saint Peter’s, but will be accessible to all students at the University. It will align with co-curricular programming in the area of leadership on campus and will provide an academic dimension to the development of student leaders with a strong ethical underpinning.

“Many of the most complex challenges in society involve ethical considerations,” said Mary Kate Naatus, Ph.D., KPMG dean of the School of Business. “This Center will be the locus on campus for leadership research, scholarship, experiential learning, practical application and teaching excellence, all aimed at equipping our graduates for today’s diverse, global business environment.”

Raymond Butkus, executive lecturer in the School of Business, has been named founding director of the Center. Butkus has been on the faculty of the School of Business for four years where he teaches courses in leadership and management. Prior to joining Saint Peter’s, he was a successful senior executive at both Fortune 100 and mid-sized corporations. He has more than 35 years of leadership experience in both business and as an officer of the U.S. Army.
