New Pastoral Associate Arrives at St. Aedan’s

Jersey City, N.J. –  Saint Peter’s College is pleased to welcome Rev. Peter W. Gyves, S.J., to the College’s Jesuit Community. Fr. Gyves will serve as a pastoral associate at St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church.

Fluent in Spanish and French as well as English, Fr. Gyves has a long career as a practicing pediatrician. Fr. Gyves was most recently the director for the Institute of Investigations in Health Sciences in Guatemala.

Gyves’ extensive experience in international communities and remarkable commitment to medical science and education will contribute greatly to the culturally rich populations of Saint Peter’s College and Jersey City,” said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s College. “We are grateful to the New York Province for Fr. Gyves’ appointment and know he will be a tremendous resource for the people of St. Aedan’s and Saint Peter’s.”

A native New Yorker, Fr. Gyves was a pastoral associate at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in New York City. He is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology, with a special interest in international medicine. His previous experience includes offering humanitarian medical relief in China and Africa as well as teaching and practicing medicine in several United States locations. Among other positions, Fr. Gyves was an instructor and clinical associate at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, assistant professor at the University of Maryland, and director of the pediatric emergency room and urgent care center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

During his career, Fr. Gyves has contributed to numerous publications, and been honored several times for his work on behalf of others. In 1999, he received the Xavier Award for his efforts to promote health and social justice in Latin America. In 2007, he was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society, for his academic competence, compassion and conscience in the service of others and the promotion of justice.

Fr. Gyves holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in theology, both from Boston College. In addition, he also possesses a Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine, a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, and a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from Weston Jesuit School of Theology.
