Saint Peter’s College Security Officer Wins Major Honor

Jersey City,NJ –Daryl Jenkins (Jersey City,NJ), a security officer with Summit Security Services assigned to Saint Peter’s College, has been honored as The American Society of Industrial Security’s western New Jersey chapter’s “Security Officer of the Year.” Jenkins, who has worked at Saint Peter’s for a year after four years in a similar role at the Newport Mall, was shocked by the honor. “I had no idea I had even been nominated,” Jenkins said. “My boss at Saint Peters, (Director of Campus Safety) Russ Hoffman, called me into his office and he had a big smile on his face. He told me that he had nominated me and had just found out I had won. He was very happy.” Hoffman has enjoyed working with Jenkins, a regular on the7 a.m.-3 p.m.shift. “He is very diligent with his patrol, building and fire inspections,” Hoffman said of Jenkins. “He is very aggressive and has quickly become one of our top officers. Everyone knows him on campus and the students respect his work.” Jenkins, who moved to New Jersey from North Carolinain 1980, was not always in law enforcement. He started his career as a warehouse supervisor at Syms, but noticed he had a knack for observing people, places and things. “I found I was good at noticing things and wanted to go into security work,” Jenkins said. “I think it also helps that I have a good personality and people feel comfortable with me. I have a 16-year-old son and even though he is a great kid, he, like the students at Saint Peter’s, are at the age where they want to test the boundaries. My job is to keep our students from going too far where they might endanger themselves or each other. Sometimes the students don’t understand the implications of their actions, but when you explain things to them on a one-to-one basis, they tend to understand.” Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City and a branch campus, specializing in adult education, is located in Englewood Cliffs. Saint Peter’s also offers classes in downtown Jersey City near the waterfront financial district and in South Amboy.
