Alternate Route to Certification Program

The Saint Peter’s University Alternate Route Program is a method for college graduates to become fully certified teachers without receiving a master’s degree.  The program has four steps which take place over the course of a calendar year.

For more information about the program please refer to the New Jersey State Department of Education’s website.

Prospective students MUST have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of 2.75 or above to enroll in the Alternate Route Program.

Step 1: 24 Hour Program

Before students can enroll in the Alternate Route Program, they must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) from the New Jersey State Department of Education.  As of October 31, 2009, New Jersey requires that in order to apply for a CE, a candidate must first complete a “24 Hour Program.”

Saint Peter’s University offers the 24 Hour Program four times per year.  The course takes place on four consecutive Saturdays on the third floor of McDermott Hall.  Classes start at 9:00AM and run until 3:15PM, with 15 minutes for lunch.  The student must complete all four sections of the program in order to be eligible to apply for a CE.  The fee for the course is $200.

Step 2: Obtain Certificate of Eligibility (CE)

Once students have completed the 24 Hour Program, they must contact the New Jersey State Department of Education to obtain their Certificate of Eligibility.

Step 3: Find employment in a school district

A student can only enter the St. Peter’s College Alternate Route program while employed at a parochial, private, or public school.  The candidate must apply to the program through the administration or human resources department of their place of employment.

Step 4: Enroll in Alternate Route to Certification Program

There are four phases of the program:

Phase Duration Fee
Phase 1a 20 hours $145
Phase 1b 60 hours $435
Phase 2 60 hours $435
Phase 3 60 hours $435

Classes take place Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday nights depending on phase and location.  Classes are always 4pm to 8pm.  The program is available at four locations: Jersey City, Kearny, Plainfield, and Sayreville.
