Saint Peter’s College will officially name John Dunne as the fourteenth Men’s Basketball Head Coach in school history at a press conference today, Wednesday May 24th, at 1 p.m. on campus. The press conference will be held in the McIntyre Room of Dinneen Hall.
Dunne comes to Saint Peter’s with a wide range of experience at the collegiate level, having served as an assistant coach for a total of 12 seasons. In his five seasons at Seton Hall (2001-2006), Dunne shared in many coaching duties, including scheduling, scouting, recruiting, breakdown of film and player development. He also assisted in monitoring the team’s academic progress.
“We are extremely happy that John has decided to join the Saint Peter’s family,” said Saint Peter’s Director of Athletics Bill Stein. “He has great ties to the area and will continue to lead the men’s basketball in the right direction on the court and in the classroom.”
Dunne spent two years as an assistant coach at Siena before heading to Seton Hall. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Manhattan College in 1998-99.
“I am excited that my first head coaching job will be at Saint Peter’s and in the MAAC,” Dunne said. “I really started my career in the MAAC back in 1998 and am looking forward to leading Saint Peter’s to the MAAC Championship and the NCAA Tournament.”
A 1992 graduate of Ithaca College with a degree in psychology, Dunne was a three-year starter and served as captain during his senior season.
Dunne began his coaching career at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania and then went to Western Michigan University, where he worked as a restricted earnings coach in 1994-95. He returned to Wilkes for one season as a full-time assistant coach and then served as an assistant coach at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y., for two seasons. While at Wilkes, he studied at East Stroudsburg and received a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in sport management.
Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City. The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy, NJ.
