Journalist Paula Butturini to Speak at SPC on October 23

Jersey City — Journalist Paula Butturini will deliver the third address in the Catholic & Jesuit Identity Lecture series on Monday, October 23 at 3 p.m. in McIntyre. Butturini will discuss The Fall of Communism: The Return of the People’s Republics to the People.

In her address, Butturini will offer a personal glimpse into how the fall of communism in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s impacted the lives of ordinary citizens. She will examine how the rapid movement toward democracy and capitalism affected those who lived under communism for nearly half a century.
Paula Butturini discussed The Fall of Communism: The Return of the People’s Republics to the People as part of the Catholic & Jesuit Identity Lecture Series.

Butturini covered the fall of communism in the Soviet bloc and the movement toward democracy while serving as the Eastern Europe correspondent based in Warsaw for the Chicago Tribune. She also worked in overseas bureaus in London, Madrid and Rome for United Press International for more than a decade. From 1983 to 1987, she covered the Vatican and Pope John Paul II for UPI. Butturini is a freelance journalist and frequent contributor to The New York Times travel section.

Butturini’s lecture is made possible through a gift from Paul Tagliabue, former National Football League Commissioner, in honor of his brother, John Tagliabue, a 1967 graduate of Saint Peter’s College and reporter with The New York Times. The gift will enable the College to invite various journalists, writers and authors to campus. The Tagliabue brothers served as the commencement speakers at the College’s commencement ceremonies in 2005 and received honorary degrees.

Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City. The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy.
