Jersey City, N.J. <\/strong>– The application pool for Saint Peter’s College 2010 Summer Scholars Program is open until Friday, April 16, 2010, for students entering their junior or senior years of high school. Drawing approximately 60 of the top students from local high schools each year, this five week program allows students to enroll in one college-level science, arts or humanities course, and earn three transferable college credits. The cost of the session is $400; an undergraduate, three-credit course at Saint Peter’s regularly costs approximately $2,000. <\/p>\n

The Summer Scholars program also gives students the opportunity to experience college life, as well as develop professional skills and knowledge that they can apply to their high school studies. Taught by full-time Saint Peter’s College professors, the 2010 Summer Scholars courses include: Human Genetics; Forensic Science; Civilization and Disease; Responses to the Land: Histories and Literatures of the Environment; and Greek Theatre. <\/p>\n

The students attend classes two days a week and, on the third day, hear a guest speaker discuss a topic relevant to their coursework. With small class sizes, students are able to work one-on-one with professors and interact with peers from varied economic, cultural and educational backgrounds. At the conclusion of the courses, students create and give group presentations to all Summer Scholars and professors in order to demonstrate what they learned in their classes, as well as develop teamwork and public speaking skills. <\/p>\n

The Summer Scholars classes meet from July 7 to August 5, 2010, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. To be eligible for the program, scholars must be in good academic standing and display a commitment to learning, extracurricular activities and public service. <\/p>\n
