Spring 2022 FAQs


Academics

How will classes take place?

Saint Peter’s will continue with in-person operations for the spring 2022 semester. Classes will be primarily held in-person with the exception of those that are traditionally online courses.

This model will allow a rapid shift if needed to a fully remote or hybrid model if required by the State of New Jersey. All faculty will be prepared to shift to remote instruction at any given time.

What safety protocols will be taken in the classrooms?

At the end of each day, CBS will disinfect all classrooms.

Can I participate in my classes completely remotely (online)?

Students are welcome to register for existing online and hybrid courses that are offered. Most undergraduate classes will be primarily in-person. However, not all courses will be offered online and it will not be possible for an undergraduate student to complete any major or their degree requirements completely online. Many graduate classes are designed and offered online or in hybrid form, but not all graduate courses will be offered fully online.

Will labs meet?

Yes, instructional labs will be open and disinfected by CBS on a daily basis.

Will the Theresa and Edward O’Toole Library be open?

Yes, the library will be open. In addition to general daily disinfecting: 

  • Technology loans (Chromebooks, laptops, camera, calculators, etc.) will be disinfected by library staff upon return
  • Digital library resources and services will be promoted and expanded through each phase

Will computer labs be open?

Yes, computer labs will be open. We have virtualized and transitioned the majority of software applications commonly in use in computer labs to online access via a software solution Apporto. Major applications such as Microsoft Office, SPSS, SAS, R and several others are now accessible from any device (desktops, laptops, tablets, phones) from anywhere. All labs and equipment such as keyboards and mice will be regularly cleaned.

Community Responsibility Statement/Training

Will there be COVID-19 training required?

Students and employees previously completed online COVID-19 training. New employees should contact the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources at eserra@saintpeters.edu if they have not completed the training. 


Dining Services

What safety measures are being implemented by Aramark?

All dining services employees are vaccinated and will follow Aramark cleaning protocols. Booster shots will be required in accordance with the University policy.

How will dining services operate?

Cleaning and disinfecting will be conducted frequently to high touch areas, with added staff to ensure procedures and protocols are adhered.


Division I Athletics and Recreational Life

Will Division I athletics take place?

All athletes must be vaccinated in accord with University policy. Additionally, Saint Peter’s Division I athletics is governed by the regulations and guidelines established by the NCAA and the MAAC.

Will the Victor R. Yanitelli, S.J. Recreational Life Center be open for recreational use?

Yes, The Victor R. Yanitelli, S.J. Recreational Life Center will be open. Please note that for athletic events, all guests ages 12 and older must provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to gain entry. Masks are required for all guests unless eating or drinking. Will intramurals and fitness classes be offered?

Some low contact intramurals will be offered this upcoming Spring starting with Dance tryouts in January. Fitness classes will resume the second week of classes. A schedule will be forthcoming. For more information, contact getinvolved@saintpeters.edu

Will the game room and fitness center in the Mac Mahon Student Center be open?

Yes, they will be open in accordance with State guidelines as long as COVID-19 cases on campus remain flat.  In the event of an increase in COVID cases, a reservation system will be put into place to control occupancy levels.  Please note, masks are required in the game room. Individuals not wearing a mask in the game room will be asked to leave.


Employees

Will I be required to travel?

Essential travel domestically is permitted in accordance with departmental budgets. 

What if I need to care for my child or another family member due to COVID-19 related illness or childcare/school closings?

For any concerns and/or questions regarding eligibility of applicable federal and state laws, individuals should contact the assistant vice president of human resources at eserra@saintpeters.edu for additional information.

Will visitors be allowed on campus?

Visitors will be required to follow the current guidelines in place for the Saint Peter’s community members. Their host will be responsible for communicating these requirements prior to their visit and each visitor must complete a Google Health Screening Form prior to their arrival, which will be kept on file with campus safety for potential contact tracing purposes.

On-campus events involving external guests:

  • When indoors, masks are required for all parties in public and common areas regardless of vaccination status.
  • Masks may be removed when eating or drinking.
  • Masks are not required for any guest when outside.

In either situation, registration lists with contact information must be kept if the need to contact trace becomes apparent.


Financial Aid

My financial situation has been severely impacted by COVID-19. Is there additional aid that I can apply for?

Can I defer attending admission to Saint Peter’s until Fall 2022 and still keep my scholarship/financial aid?

We will work individually with each student to carefully plan their deferment; this will include counseling students on financial aid based on the term they intend to enroll.  Please contact admissions@saintpeters.edu to speak with a counselor about your options.

I’m interested in learning more about Saint Peter’s University. Are campus tours and visits taking place?

Yes, campus tours and visits are taking place in-person and virtually. For more information, students are advised to contact the Office of Admission at admissions@saintpeters.edu  or saintpeters.edu/visit to learn more about visit and tour options. Visitors to campus will be required to complete a health screening form.


Health & Safety

Is there a vaccination policy for students and employees?

To ensure that we can return safely and deliver the type of experience our students deserve, Saint Peter’s is requiring all students who will be on campus—undergraduates, graduates, doctoral and professional and continuing studies— as well as all faculty, staff and administrators to be vaccinated and boosted. Individuals must  present evidence of COVID-19 immunization, defined as the administration of a complete series of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Use Listing (EUL). There are currently three COVID-19 vaccines authorized by the FDA for emergency use and recommended by the ACIP: two mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna) and one viral vector vaccine (Janssen [Johnson & Johnson]) and an additional four vaccines authorized by WHO (Oxford/AstraZeneca, CoviShield, Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV, and Sinovac).

Students enrolled in fully online and off-campus degree programs will not be required to be vaccinated unless they intend to be on campus for any reason.

Please visit the New Jersey vaccine appointment finder to schedule an appointment. For those out of state, please consult the national vaccine appointment finder. In fact, many locations are allowing walk-in vaccinations with no appointment.

Is there a booster requirement for students and employees?

Saint Peter’s is requiring all students who will be on campus—undergraduates, graduates, doctoral and professional and continuing studies— and all faculty, staff and administrators to receive the COVID-19 booster by March 1, 2022.

Students that previously received medical or religious exemptions or are on a different vaccine schedule should contact deanofstudents@saintpeters.edu while employees should contact eserra@saintpeters.edu to discuss your situation and timeline. 

Students must present evidence of having received a COVID-19 booster via this form by March 1, 2022.

Can I be exempt from the vaccination requirement?

Medical and religious exemption requests will be considered in accordance with the University’s reasonable accommodation policy and procedures. To view the Saint Peter’s University immunization policy or to learn more about applying for a medical or religious exemption, click here.

Students and employees that were granted an exemption for the COVID-19 vaccination must submit weekly negative COVID-19 tests in order to gain access to campus.

Testing is the individual's responsibility, so it is important that you plan ahead weekly so you are not restricted from campus. Test results must be submitted every Monday morning no later than 8:00 a.m. Results must not be older than 72 hours for a viral test (PCR) or 24 hours for a rapid test.

Are students and employees still required to check-in daily on the CampusClear app?

The CampusClear app is no longer supported and will no longer be utilized.

Will masks be required?

All individuals on campus, regardless of vaccination status, will be required until further notice, to wear face masks in indoor settings.

According to the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE), individuals should wear face masks in indoor settings where there is increased risk or an inability to social distance, including, but not limited to: 

  • Crowded indoor settings/events. 
  • Indoor settings involving activities with close contact with others who may not be fully vaccinated. 
  • Indoor settings where the vaccine status of other individuals in the setting is unknown. 
  • Where an individual is immunocompromised or at increased risk for severe disease. 
  • During periods of high community transmission. In general, individuals do not need to wear masks when outdoors. 

In addition, individuals on campus who are not fully vaccinated must also wear a mask in crowded outdoor settings or during activities that involve sustained close contact with other people. Fully vaccinated people may choose to wear a mask in crowded outdoor settings if they or someone in their household is immunocompromised. 

Will social distancing be enforced?

Individuals who are not fully vaccinated should continue to practice social distancing.

Will there be reminders on campus about wearing masks and social distancing?

Signage has been ordered and installed at every entrance to all buildings on campus reiterating that masks are required indoors. Floor markers will be in place for social distancing in high traffic areas.

Will COVID-19 testing be available?

The NJ Department of Health and Vault Medical Services have partnered to offer a free, at-home COVID-19 saliva test kit that is available to every New Jerseyan who thinks they need a test – even if you don't have symptoms. To order a free test kit, visit learn.vaulthealth.com/nj.

In addition, starting Saturday, January 15, private health insurers will be required to cover up to eight home COVID-19 tests per month for people on their plans. Students should inquire directly with their health insurance providers and the Office of Human Resources will be in touch with employees in regards to the procedure that Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield will follow. 

Starting Tuesday, January 18, you will be able to order free at-home COVID-19 test kits from the government. Visit https://www.covidtests.gov/ to order your free at-home tests or go directly to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) order form here: https://special.usps.com/testkits.

COVID-19 testing is also available at many locations throughout the state.

Will individual offices have sufficient supplies of masks, disinfectant wipes, sanitizers?

Offices can order cleaning supplies via their departmental budgets.

What cleaning measures are being implemented?

The University’s custodial cleaning program uses a disinfectant to clean touchpoints, public and common area restrooms daily.

There are also dispenser stations throughout campus containing hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer can help prevent the spread of the virus, though proper hand-washing technique is deemed to be more effective by the CDC.

It is encouraged that departments use disinfectant wipes for human touch points within their work spaces such as keyboards, public counters, credit card readers, phones, doorknobs, light switches and other shared surfaces and items.

The facilities team will monitor all restrooms to ensure that hand soap is available. Hand sanitizer stations have been provided in all classrooms, at the entrances to all buildings and all dining locations, and in other areas where people congregate.

How will airflow be made safe in small offices without HVAC systems?

All central and individual air units are being cleaned—and filters replaced—prior to the return to campus with continuing preventative maintenance measures in place throughout the year.  

Will someone be screening all individuals that enter a building on campus to ensure they are wearing a mask, don’t have a fever, etc.?

With more than 30 buildings and multiple entrances on campus we will be relying on self-monitoring each and every day before entering campus.

Will I be screened for COVID-19 or do I need to produce a negative COVID-19 test prior to move-in/start of classes?

No, since Saint Peter’s is requiring all students who will be on campus—undergraduates, graduates, doctoral and professional and continuing studies—to be vaccinated. Please see the University’s vaccination policy for more information. You can view the latest CDC COVID-19 testing guidelines here

All international students should review the International FAQs for details surrounding their arrival. 

Any employee that has traveled internationally or to another state will be required to follow current state and federal rules before returning to campus.

Students in internships, clinicals or student teaching should follow their placement site’s guidance in addition to the University’s guidance.

What do I do if I feel sick?

Students may contact the Office of Health Services at (201) 761-7445 or their primary care provider.

Faculty, staff and administrators should contact their primary care provider.

In the case of a positive COVID-19 test, students must inform the Office of Health Services and employees must inform the Office of Human Resources. 

I feel anxious about COVID-19. What can I do?

We understand that some community members are anxious. If you would like to talk with someone, there are resources available for you. 

Students –  The counseling and psychological services (CAPS) office, located on the second floor of Saint Peter Hall, is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please call (201) 761-6420 if you are seeking support. 

Students and employees – Campus ministry is also open and campus ministers are available to talk with students, faculty, staff and administrators who are feeling anxious. 

Employees can also contact Contact EAPBusiness, a no-cost, confidential service provided through human resources, at (877) 595-5281 or guidanceresources.com

What happens if there is a confirmed case on campus? Will I be notified?

The University is committed to transparency so we have created a COVID-19 Reporting Dashboard, which houses COVID-19 data related to our campus. This source of information can be found here and is updated weekly, by noon on Monday, reflecting any cases from the prior week. This has been, and will continue to be, the only way the University will be communicating about confirmed cases.

The University has identified and trained employees that undertake a confidential contact tracing process when a member of the University community tests positive for COVID-19, has COVID-19 related symptoms or was exposed to another person suspected of or testing positive for COVID-19. Health services, human resources and campus safety have been working collaboratively to manage contact tracing activity, in conjunction with the Jersey City Department of Health. All members of the University community must cooperate with contact tracing.

Please note that contact tracing protocols allow for only those who are a close contact as defined by the CDC and have been exposed to be informed if someone has tested positive. While we have, and will continue to, report numbers, we do not, and will not, divulge the names of individuals affected or specific details. I ask that you continue to respect the privacy of the members of our community.

Am I required to report if I am informed by an employee or student that they tested positive for COVID?

Yes.  All members of our community are required to report suspected or known COVID-19 cases on our campus whether via issuing a report personally or encouraging a report to be made (for example, ensuring that a co-worker or fellow classmate officially reports a known or suspected case of COVID-19). It is all of our responsibility to do our part to keep the campus safe.

How can I stay healthy?

Below are some guidelines and tips for keeping healthy.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering when around others.
  • Open windows for some fresh air, especially with the current nice weather.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Don’t share personal items with others.
  • Cover your coughs. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or crook of your arm when you cough or sneeze (not your hands). Toss the tissue in the trash, and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer immediately after.
  • Wash your hands often. The CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Hand washing should be done regularly, including after you’ve been in public, after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing, using the restroom, and before you eat any food.
What are my options if I don’t feel comfortable coming to campus? If I am immunocompromised, what accommodations will be made for me?

Medical and religious exemption requests will be considered in accordance with the law and the University’s reasonable accommodation policy and procedures for faculty, staff and administrators. For all concerns and/or questions regarding eligibility of applicable federal and state laws, individuals should contact the assistant vice president of human resources at eserra@saintpeters.edu

For students, exceptions due to medical conditions will be reviewed and approved with proper documentation and in accordance with the guidelines outlined on the Saint Peter’s University disability services webpage. Students may opt to participate in already existing online classes. Not all classes will be available online. 

What will happen to me if I test positive or am exposed to someone who has tested positive once the semester begins?

Fully Vaccinated Individuals following an exposure to an individual with suspected or confirmed COVID-19:

Individuals with no COVID-like symptoms do not need to quarantine or be restricted from work following an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.  

Individuals exposed by close contacts living in the same household who have come into close contact with someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be tested 3-5 days after exposure, and wear a mask in public indoor settings for 10 days or until they receive a negative test result. 

Anyone exposed to someone with COVID-19 should self-monitor for symptoms for 10 days and if symptoms develop, isolate away from others, seek medical evaluation if needed, and be tested for COVID-19.

Unvaccinated Individuals following an exposure to an individual with suspected or confirmed COVID-19:

Individuals with no COVID-like symptoms do not need to quarantine or be restricted from work following an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 but MUST wear a mask in all areas of campus both indoors and outdoors for 14 days following exposure and should refrain from entering spaces where they are unable to social distance or wear their mask.

Individuals exposed by close contacts living in the same household who have come into close contact with someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 should be tested 10-14 days after exposure, and wear a mask in public indoor settings for 14 days. 

Anyone exposed to someone with COVID-19 should self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days and if symptoms develop, isolate away from others, seek medical evaluation if needed, and be tested for COVID-19. 

Positive Cases of COVID-19 

Individuals testing positive for COVID-19 regardless of vaccination status:

The CDC states the following for individuals with positive infections:

Asymptomatic individuals who never develop symptoms must quarantine at home (residential students must contact the Office of Residence Life for further instructions) and can end isolation five days after testing positive.  Individuals should continue to wear a well-fitted mask for the next five days after isolation ends and avoid places where they are unable to wear a mask, such as the gym, eating around others at dining locations on campus or any activity where social distancing might not be possible.  

Symptomatic individuals with moderate to mild symptoms must quarantine at home (residential students must contact the Office of Residence Life for further instructions)and can end isolation after five  days if at least 24 hours have passed without a fever and other symptoms have improved. Individuals should continue to wear a well-fitted mask for the next five days after isolation ends and avoid places where they are unable to wear a mask, such as the gym, eating around others at dining locations on campus or any activity where social distancing might not be possible.

Symptomatic individuals with severe symptoms must quarantine at home and need to continue isolation for a full 14 days.

Notification Process for all individuals testing positive

Students must immediately contact healthservices@saintpeters.edu if they experience any COVID-19 symptoms or exposure and will not be permitted to be on campus if they are required to isolate or quarantine.  

Faculty, staff, and administrators must immediately contact hrdept@saintpeters.edu if you experience any COVID-19 symptoms or exposure and will not be permitted to be on campus if you are required to isolate or quarantine.  

Will contact tracing and proximity tracking be utilized?

The University has identified and trained employees that undertake a confidential contact tracing process when a member of the University community tests positive for COVID-19, has COVID-19 related symptoms or was a close contact that was exposed to another person confirmed of testing positive for COVID-19. Health services, human resources and campus safety have been working collaboratively to manage contact tracing activity, in conjunction with the Jersey City Department of Health. All members of the University community must cooperate with contact tracing.

Please note that contact tracing protocols allow for only those who have been exposed to be informed if someone has tested positive. While we have, and will continue to, report numbers, we do not, and will not, divulge the names of individuals affected or specific details. I ask that you continue to respect the privacy of the members of our community.  

Will I be penalized for missing class/work due to COVID-19 illness, quarantine or self-isolation?

No. Like any illness that results in missed classes, students should consult and work with their individual professors to arrange for making up missed classes, assignments, exams  and other academic work. Students should also consult with their academic programs advisor.

How do I help prevent the spread of viruses, including COVID-19?

The most effective prevention at this time is to avoid exposure. You can visit the CDC website on prevention for detailed information.

The CDC recommends the following actions to minimize your risks:

  • Stay informed and up-to-date by monitoring the CDC website.
  • Get vaccinated for influenza (the flu) and other respiratory diseases.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  •  If you think you are sick, call your health care provider first for assistance.

International Students/Study Abroad

I am an international student who may not be able to come to campus in the spring due to visa issues or travel restrictions. Will I be able to enroll in courses and learn remotely?

Currently enrolled students will be required to continue their degree program in person.  Those students pursuing an on-line degree will be able to continue their studies on-line but may be required to participate in person if they are in the United States on a F-1 visa.

When will a decision about fall 2022 study abroad programs be made?

For now, we are planning to offer study abroad (full semester programs as well as travel courses) during the fall semester of 2022, but will monitor travel opportunities throughout the semester.  Students interested in learning more about Global Learning programs including study abroad should contact Chris Gallagher at CGallagher2@saintpeters.edu for more information.


Residence Life

When will residence halls open?

Resident students will move into residence halls beginning January 18

Residents will be permitted to have two individuals, who are symptom-free, assist with move-in. These individuals assisting for the day do not have to show proof of vaccination. All individuals will be required to wear masks or face coverings in keeping with state mandates. 

I am traveling from an international location. Will I need to quarantine upon arrival?

Saint Peter’s is requiring all students who will be on campus—undergraduates, graduates, doctoral and professional and continuing studies—to be vaccinated. Please see the University’s vaccination policy for more information.  Therefore, international students do not need to quarantine upon arrival since they will be vaccinated. This is subject to change should the government issue any mandates on travel. 


Student Life & Services

Will clubs and organizations be allowed to gather on campus?

Clubs and organizations will meet in-person while following State of New Jersey mandates for social gatherings and/or virtually. All in-person student participants must be vaccinated in accordance with the University policy.

Will student services be available?

All student support services such as Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Center for Career Engagement and Experiential Learning (CEEL), the Center for Academic Success and Engagement (CASE) and Campus Ministry, among others, will be assisting students in-person.

Will University-wide events take place on or off campus?

Yes, they will be in accordance with the most current State guidelines. 


Transportation

Will there be any changes to the shuttle service?

In order to provide a safe experience, shuttle drivers and those riding the shuttle must wear a mask at all times. Only Saint Peter’s University students and employees can utilize the shuttle. Shuttles will be thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis.

What is the deadline to obtain a parking pass for the spring 2022 semester?

To purchase a parking permit you must complete the parking permit application online. The application can be found at: Parking Permit Application.

Once the application has been completed you will receive confirmation and your permit will be processed. You are required to submit documents to be uploaded (which can be easily done by using your smartphone).
