Honors Student Wins First Place for Research

Alejandro Gomez Gonzalez ‘21 won first place at the 14th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium held by William Paterson University on Saturday, April 17, 2021. Alejandro’s poster titled “A Green Route to the Degradation of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (A Potential Carcinogen) Using a Water-Splitting Catalyst” won in the General and Inorganic Chemistry Session.

Alejandro is an Honors senior majoring in Biotechnology and Biochemistry. He is a member of both Beta-Beta-Beta, the National Biology Honor Society, and Gamma Sigma Epsilon, the National Chemistry Honor Society. He is an undergraduate SURGE Research Associate at Saint Peter’s University and has held previous internships with Sustainable Jersey City, the Leadership Alliance Professional Development Series and the Amgen Scholars Summer Science Series at Cornell University, and the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

The Honors Program is proud to support Alejandro’s continuing research with Dr. Yosra Badiei of the Chemistry Department on his senior thesis, A Sustainable Pathway for Water Depollution via Catalytic Water Oxidation.
