The Class of 1971 Reunites; Presents Delta Sigma Pi Students with Original Gavel

On January 28, members of the Class of 1971 gathered on campus to celebrate the 45th anniversary of their graduation from Saint Peter’s University.

Reunion co-chair Mike Serpico ’71 urged his fellow classmates to remain engaged with the University, pointing out who among them were still active as members of the alumni board, Board of Regents and Alumni Glee Club. He further encouraged his fellow Peacocks to come back for their 50th reunion in five years.

At the reunion, co-chairs Serpico and Greg Kaplan ’71 and classmate Vincent Fusco ’71, who are Delta Sigma Pi alumni, presented three current members of Delta Sigma Pi, Anica Bustamante ’18,  Nicholas Brown ’18 and Devin Varela ’20 with the original gavel from the charter’s founding in 1964. In her acceptance speech, Bustamante shared with the group what it means to be part of the Saint Peter’s family as the daughter of two alumni and a presidential scholar.

Reflecting on the event, and on his college years, Kaplan said, “As the years go by I believe we all look back at that time and realize it was a life changing experience. For many of us it was our first opportunity to be truly on our own; form opinions that would guide us through our lives, learn from our mistakes, revel in the joy of our successes and above all create friendships that would last a lifetime.”
