Jersey City Deputy Mayor Discusses City Government with Students and Faculty

Jersey City Deputy Mayor Vivian Brady-Phillips came to the McIntyre Conference Center at Saint Peter’s on Thursday, December 3 to discuss city government and the importance of community and public service initiatives with students and faculty members.

Deputy Mayor Brady-Phillip’s presentation was part of Pizza & Politics, an annual event series hosted by the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership at Saint Peter’s University.

During her discussion, Deputy Mayor Brady-Phillips touched upon several of her roles, which included collaborating on community service projects, developing greater investment in social services and increasing the exposure of career opportunities to youths through initiatives such as Jersey City Summer Works and the Jersey City Internship program.

“I always wanted to be engaged with the community somehow and I feel lucky that I get to do this as part of my work every day,” said Deputy Mayor Brady-Phillips.

Deputy Mayor Brady-Phillips also discussed the city’s efforts to help the local business community such as working to secure grants and learning how to revitalize the climate so that it is more receptive to businesses. In addition, she emphasized the importance of working with college students through providing them internships in the mayor’s office as well as in various departments.

“It’s an enormous help to us, but it’s also helpful for them to understand what’s happening in the city government,” she added. “Internships are a great way for students to see if city government is something in which they might be interested.”
