WSPR Radio Celebrates New Location at the Mac Mahon Student Center

WSPR Radio, “the voice of Saint Peter’s University,” celebrated the station’s new location on the fourth floor of the Mac Mahon Student Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 20.

The newly opened student center is a major component of Students at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s University. The state-of-the-art, six-story structure is the new arrival point at Saint Peter’s University and provides a powerful first impression of the campus.

More than 75 students, faculty and staff including University President Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Marylou Yam, Ph.D., and Professor and General Manager for WSPR Joe Lamachia attended. The day was commemorated live on WSPR’s channel with a special on-air guest –Mike Yam, former ESPN anchor and radio host, who discussed his position as studio host for the PAC-12 conference via telephone from the west coast.

“This space is tremendous,” said Ricardo De Jesus ’14, secretary for WSPR Radio. “The last office we had was so small that people didn’t even know we had a station.”

The equipment at the station is also new, and allows hosts to play songs from an iPod, conduct cellphone interviews and more.

“The facility has all the prerequisite equipment, soundproof interior and desk area and furnishings comparable to commercial facilities in major markets,” said Lamachia.

WSPR Radio currently provides more than two dozen different programs weekly, with more than 30 students taking part as hosts, copywriters, producers, newscasters, sportscasters, editors, managers and program developers and directors. Other positions, including sales, will be developed in the coming months.
