Saint Peter’s Welcomes the Actors Shakespeare Company to the University

Jersey City, N.J. – October 1, 2013 – Saint Peter’s University and the Actors Shakespeare Company signed an articulation agreement for a long-term affiliation between the two organizations. The Actors Shakespeare Company (ASC) is a professional ensemble theater, which is a member of the New Jersey Theater Alliance and has served the HudsonCounty area through 13 theatrical seasons. The partnership with ASC makes Saint Peter’s University one of only four institutions of higher education in New Jersey to have an affiliation with a theatrical company.

“We are extremely proud to welcome the Company to our campus and we look forward to having professional actors work with our students to develop their skills and talents in the area of classical theater,” said Marylou Yam, Ph.D., provost and vice president of academic affairs at Saint Peter’s University. “The affiliation will only serve to enrich what the University is already doing for our students in terms of the arts and drama.”

ASC provides performances of Shakespearian plays along with other classics and classically inspired works, readings and workshops for individuals of all ages. As part of this agreement during the academic year, the Company will be presenting six student workshops and two guest lectures in English and education courses. The Company will also hold a Shakespeare “sampler” on campus with scenes and monologues, which will be open to the public. In the fall of 2014, the Company plans to hold a major production in the RoyIrvingTheatre on the Jersey City campus.

“We have great enthusiasm for this newfound partnership with Saint Peter’s University,” said Michael Basile of the Actors Shakespeare Company. “Our mission coincides so beautifully with the mission of the University and we look forward to many years of this mutually benefitting relationship.”
