Student Holds Internship at the United Nation’s Department of Public Information

Political science major Blanca M. Hernandez ’15 is interning at the United Nation’s Department of Public Information (DPI). The DPI was established in 1946, by General Assembly resolution 13 (I), to promote global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations.

“What caught my attention about this position was that I would be exposed to a different world and introduced to many people,” said Hernandez.

According to its website, The Department of Public Information is dedicated to communicating the ideals and work of the United Nations to the world; to interacting and partnering with diverse audiences; and to building support for peace, development and human rights for all. The DPI utilizes radio, television, print, the Internet, video-conferencing and other media tools to accomplish this goal.

Under the supervision of Janet C. Salazar, the permanent representative to the United Nations, Hernandez organizes networking events held by the DPI. She also networks with many nonprofit organizations and even has even met several ambassadors during her internship.

“I am glad that I have been able to grow a connection with Ms. Janet,” said Hernandez. “It made me realize that I can achieve my goals if I just get myself out there.”

Hernandez encourages other students to participate in internships as well, saying, “I would recommend anyone to take the chance and apply to as many internships as they can to gain experience. Also, doors will be opened during the process.”
