Jersey City, N.J. – The Guarini Institute for Governmental Affairs hosts its first lecture of the year on September 30 with economics and social policy expert George Borjas, Ph.D., an alumnus from the class of 1971. Borjas will provide a summary of recent research on the economics of immigration and the implications for the future of United States immigration policy.
An economics and social policy professor at The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Borjas’ teaching and research interests focus on the impact of government regulations on labor markets, with an emphasis on the economic impact of immigration. He is the author of Wage Policy in the Federal Bureaucracy; Friends or Strangers: The Impact of Immigrants on the U.S. Economy; Heaven’s Door: Immigration Policy and the American Economy; and the textbook, Labor Economics. Additionally, he edited Immigration and the Work Force; Issues in the Economics of Immigration; and Poverty, International Migration and Asylum. Prior to joining the faculty at The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Borjas was a professor of economics at the University of California, San Diego. He has also served as a consultant to various government agencies.
In addition to receiving a Bachelor of Science in economics from Saint Peter’s in 1971, Borjas also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the College in 2003. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Columbia University in 1975.
Established in 1994 by former New Jersey Congressman Frank Guarini, the Guarini Institute for Governmental Affairs aims to provide a non-partisan forum for discussion of key public policy issues among Saint Peter’s students. The Institute sponsors lectures and programs throughout the academic year to raise awareness, promote critical thinking, debate and encourage careers in public service.
