John J. Delaney 50 Alumni Reception to Take Place on Friday, May 11, 2007

Jersey City – The Saint Peter’s College John J. Delaney ’50 Alumni Reception will take place on Friday, May 11 at Casino in the Park in Jersey City. The College will honor three individuals at the event. This year’s honorees include:

Billy Joe Mercado ’07 (day session) and Niurka Mederos ’07 (evening session) – Recipients of the James J. Damiano ’53 Award. This award is presented to two members of the graduating class, one each from the day and evening sessions, for leadership and scholarship throughout their collegiate careers. 

During his collegiate career, Billy Joe Mercado ’07 served as President of the Student Senate, resident assistant and orientation leader. He previously worked in the office of the academic dean and was featured in the College’s advertising campaign. Last summer, Mercado interned at Fidelity Investments. 

Niurka Mederos ‘07 is a manager of the Patients Relations Department in the Palisades Medical Center (PMC).   Mederos is a member of the Saint Peter’s College SPUR Society. The Spur Society is the honor society of the School of Professional & Continuing Studies and recognizes students for academic excellence and leadership. 

Gerard P. Protomastro, Ph.D. – Recipient of the George F. Johnson, S.J. Faculty Award. This award is presented to a faculty member for excellence in teaching.  Dr. Protomastro has taught in the Mathematics Department at Saint Peter’s College for 31 years serving as the Chair since 1997. 

Dr. Protomastro received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Montclair University, a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Clemson University.  Students selected Dr. Protomastro six times for the Varrichio Award for excellence in teaching of mathematics. 

Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey.  Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs.  The main campus is located in Jersey City.  The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy, NJ.
