Garry Prime ’65 to Speak on Challenges of the Third World

Jersey City — Garry Prime ’65 will discuss the challenges of the Third World and his experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in the African nation of Malawi as part of the Catholic and Jesuit Identity Lecture Series at Saint Peter’s College on Monday, October 2 at noon in McIntyre Hall.  The lecture is free and open to the general public.

Prime, who is the President and Chief Executive officer of Evercel Inc., served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi in the 1960s. His two and one-half year tour marked the beginning of a 35-year relationship spanning two continents between Prime and the people of Malawi.

The Malawi Children’s Village built a sewing center to help train tailors in the local villages.  The Malawi Children’s Village project cares for approximately 3,000 orphans, providing services such as food, medical care, education, shelter, clothing and vocational training.
In 1997, Prime and his former Peace Corps colleagues started the Malawi Children’s Village. The organization cares for approximately 3,000 orphans and provides food, clothing, shelter, medical care and education. Prime and his colleagues recently started another group called Orphan Support Africa, aiming to replicate their success in Malawi in other African nations such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Prime’s lecture is the second in the fall term of the Catholic and Jesuit Identity Lecture Series. Dr. William Evans of the College’s Philosophy Department spoke earlier this month on the vocation of the teacher in the Ignatian tradition.

Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey.  Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs.  The main campus is located in Jersey City.  The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy, NJ.
