Four Saint Peter’s College faculty members with more than 20 years of service to College received the Bene Merenti awards on August 29. They are Dr. Joyce Henson, Dr. Joseph Aloysius McLaughlin, Dr. Thomas Kenny and Professor Walter Lehman.
Dr. Joyce Henson, a resident of Jersey City, joined the College’s Business Administration Department in 1983 and was the first woman to serve as chair of the department in 2006. She continues to chair the department. She earned her undergraduate degree from Keene State College, an MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University and an M.A. in Economics and Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Demography from Fordham. Dr. Henson is well-known for incorporating practical business situations into her teaching. In the Jesuit tradition, she often includes a community service component into her classes. In 1998, she received the George F. Johnson, S.J. Award for Teaching Excellence.
Dr. Joseph Aloysius McLaughlin of Weehawken has served the College in a variety of roles since 1986. He is currently a professor in the College’s Urban Studies and Public Policy Department and in the Jesuit Mission Identity office. He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his teaching career including the George F. Johnson, S.J. Award for Teaching Excellence and the Honorary Cross Keys Award. His work as an academic advisor to the student-athletes was recognized with induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Dr. McLaughlin has served as Faculty Senate President, Coordinator of the College reading program and Director of the Graduate Program in Education during a period of significant growth. He has also served on the Weehawken Board of Education for two terms. Dr. McLaughlin earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Saint Peter’s College and Doctorate in Education from Seton Hall University.
Dr. Thomas Kenny of Jersey City began his career at Saint Peter’s College in 1986. As associate librarian and head of public services, he is a helpful resource to all members of the College community who visit and use the school’s library and information services for research. Kenny earned a B.A. from Manhattan College, a M.A. from Columbia University, a M.S.L.S. from Pratt Institute and a Ph.D. from New York University. An English literature scholar by training, he has published many articles. He is a former bibliographer for the James Joyce Quarterly and takes part in discussion groups of the James Joyce Society of New York.
Professor Walter Lehman of Tenafly joined SPC in 1986 as an Economics adjunct. Lehman earned a B.A. from Saint John’s University and a M.B.A. from New York University.
Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City. The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy, NJ.
