Commemoration of Jesuit Martyrs Week

Jersey City, NJ (November 15, 2004) –Saint Peter’s College has several events planned for the week of November 15th to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the assassination of the Jesuit martyrs and their housekeepers in El Salvador in 1989. A dramatic reading from “The Witness” by Ernest Ferlita, S.J. will take place on the anniversary date, Tuesday, November 16th. Poster art depicting social justice movements and human rights campaigns will be displayed throughout the day on November 17th as part of the “Celebration of Life and Human Rights” programs and activities. Thomas Sheridan, S.J, will speak at the celebration. Music and poetry will also be featured. James Kuntz, S.J., will deliver the homily at the College community Mass in celebration of the martyrs on November 18. Fr. Kuntz will commission SPC students, faculty and staff who plan to attend the Ignatian Teach-In in Columbus, GA and march on the School of the Americas at Fort Benning November 19-21. The SPC students who will participate in the weekend’s activities are Andrea Freeman, Elizabeth Reavey and Niamh Sarno. Faculty and staff scheduled to go to Georgia include Anna Brown, Patricia Santoro, Marysue Callan-Farley and Jesuit Volunteer Corps member Guillermo Carreron.
