Mike Granelli Nears Major Coaching Milestone

Needs One Win To Become Ninth NCAA Women’s Basketball Coach To Win 600 Games Basketball Hall of Fame Requests Items From Historic Win, When It Comes Jersey City, NJ– (January 12, 2004)– Saint Peter’s College women’s basketball coach Mike Granelli needs one win to become only the ninth coach, and the first male, in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to win 600 games. His Peahens’next game is against Fairfield on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Yanitelli Center. The Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA has contacted Saint Peter’s officials requesting items from Granelli’s historic win. The College will send ticket stubs, score book, and game ball when Granelli reaches 600 wins. Granelli is currently 599-240 in his 32 years as the coach at Saint Peter’s. He will join the University of Tennessee’s Pat Summitt and University of Texas’ Jody Conradt as the only coaches to win 600 games at one school. Granelli’s tenure at Saint Peter’s is the longest stint at one school in NCAA history. As the coaching dean of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Granelli will also become the first coach on the list to hail from a mid-major conference. The other eight 600 win coaches work in the SEC, Big East, ACC and Big Ten. He has guided the Peahens to seven NCAA Tournament appearances while winning 10 regular season and nine post-season titles in 26 years of MAAC women’s basketball. Granelli’s Saint Peter’s program is the winningest of all of the nation’s Catholic schools. “We are very fortunate that Mike has chosen to remain at Saint Peter’s College over the years and he has always done an incredible job with the women’s basketball program,” said Saint Peter’s Athletic Director Bill Stein, an assistant coach on the 1988United States men’s basketball Olympic team.. “He is an excellent basketball coach. He averages 19 wins a year, his players are quality young women who have always had an excellent graduation rat.
