Area Schools Will Participate in 12th Annual
High School Model United Nations on March 18

February 28, 2003— Jersey City, NJ–

Ambassador Mackay has held his position at the United Nations since January 2001. Previously he served as Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in New Zealand’s capitol city of Wellington.

“The Model United Nations emphasizes the need for open and constructive dialogue among all nations to solve today’s complex world problems and to establish the patterns of cooperation that will be needed to face the problems of humankind’s global future,” Saint Peter’s CollegeAssociate Professor in Political Science Dr. Richard Thurston. “That future is in hands of today’s young and to be part of a process of teaching them the importance ofinternational cooperation is a most honorable mission.”

Under Dr. Thurston’s direction, the attending high school students assume the roles of United Nations representatives and participate in discussions to resolve current issues of global concern. Each high school delegation is assigned to represent a country and, by utilizing a study guide sent to a faculty advisor prior to the conference, learns about issues impacting world peace.
