Saint Peter’s College Faculty Member Authors Film Book

February 14, 2003– Jersey City, NJ– Saint Peter’s College professor Dr. William Luhr (Floral Park, NY) has co-authored the second edition of Thinking About Movies: Watching, Questioning, Enjoying (Blackwell Publishing) with Peter Lehman.who heads the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program at Arizona State University. The book, intended for introductory film classes, is a comprehensive guide for students and movie lovers who want to learn how to watch movies critically and analytically. The text offers the critical building blocks required to understand film as an important narrative and cultural form. It guides readers through basic film concepts – narrative structure, authorship, genre, actors and stars – as well as more complex analyses of race, class, gender, film theory, audience, and reception. Dr. Luhr has taught film and literature at Saint Peter’s since 1976. He has now authored eight books on film and is one of the nation’s leading experts on Raymond Chandler and Film Noir. He is also authored two books about Blake Edwards, the legendary director, producer, and screenwriter. Along with his work at Saint Peter’s, Dr. Luhr is also co-chair of the prestigious Columbia University Seminar on Cinema and Interdisciplinary Interpretation, whose members and monthly speakers have included many of the country’s major film commentators.
