Thirty-four area churches and synagogues are members of the IFCH-UC network and work to promote personal development, independence and self-sufficiency, as well as community building for safe and stable neighborhoods. “Since my high school days at Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, I have had a lifelong passion for service in the area of homelessness,” Hartnett said. “The Jesuits taught us about the need to break the classic vicious cycle of poverty – poor housing, leading to poor education, leading to poor jobs, leading to poor housing. I’ve never forgotten that and have always felt that, whatever other crises or problems people have to deal with, no child deserves to be without a home and there is no hope of breaking the cycle without a home.”
