May 7, 2002– Anna Barthold to Attend NCAA Foundation Leadership Conferece

Anna Barthold, a junior women’s basketball player from Sundsvall, Sweden, will represent Saint Peter’s College May 26-31 at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.
Barthold, who majors in International Business and Trade, will attend the conference, which takes place in conjunction with the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Programs (CHAMPS stands for Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success).

The mission of the Leadership Conference is to develop a diverse group of student-athletes who participate in challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable the participants to become change agents on their campuses and in their communities.

Among the skills and values the Conference seeks to enhance are: communication; decision-making; problem-solving; critical thinking; collaboration; listening; networking; planning and prioritizing; ability to reflect; political skills; working in a group; and understanding and appreciation of diversity.

The participating student-athletes are expected to apply their skills in addressing campus issues that are critical to student-athletes and to share what they have learned with their peers on campus, including other student-athletes and campus leaders.

Anna Barthold was selected to represent Saint Peter’s College through a process in which the school submitted four people to the NCAA for consideration. The others submitted for consideration were: Josh Pineiro (junior; baseball; Hoboken, NJ; political science/Spanish majors); Pam DeLuca (sophomore; softball; Middletown, NJ; marketing management major) and Corey Hinnant (sophomore; basketball; Bay Shore, NY; psychology major).

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Programs were first implemented by the NCAA in 1994 and Saint Peter’s became a participant in 2000. Jessica Backhus, a December 2001 graduate, who competed in volleyball and track and field, represented Saint Peter’s College at last May’s Leadership Conference.

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Programs emphasize academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development and community service.
