Few undergraduate majors can pave the way to success as smoothly as English literature.

A survey of English department graduates found that they are employed in a surprising range of careers, including public relations, law, banking, publishing, teaching and business management.

Almost all respondents felt that their English degree not only helped them enter their careers, but also provided the background that enabled them to succeed in their positions.

Whether it’s Melville or Mark Twain, Steinbeck or Shakespeare, the written word has the power to illuminate and transform your life.

A major or minor in English can enhance your academic program by strengthening your analytical and writing skills and providing a valuable background in literature.

The Hopkins Scholar Program offers students the opportunity to work individually under the direction of a faculty member on an independent research project and produce a senior thesis.
