About Dr. Garsman

I am a Family Nurse Practitioner, so my clinical practice includes both pediatric and adult patients. I have cared for patients in both the acute care setting and the primary care setting. My areas of research are focused on health disparities in vulnerable populations, which include racial minorities, the poor, women, children, adolescents, and the developmentally disabled.

“My philosophy of teaching is to create an environment of learning through a variety of active learning experiences that can be transferred to real-life clinical- situations. This will provide nursing students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and competencies that are required to becoming a professional nurse. Nursing education focuses on leadership, open-mindedness, independence in thinking, accountability, competency and an interdisciplinary approach.”

Research Interests

Health disparities in vulnerable populations, with a specific focus on the relationship between acculturative stress, obesity, and measures of allostatic load in immigrants.
