The Health Information Management Program prepares graduates to take a leading role in the management of patient information collected and maintained in electronic and manual processes. Roles in HIM are expansive and include management, medical coding, data analysis and computerized system development and maintenance ( www.hicareers.com ). Students who successfully complete the four-year program are granted a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Management jointly by Rutgers University and Saint Peter’s University. The Program involves eight traditional semesters in total: four semesters of coursework offered at Saint Peter's, and four semesters plus one summer session offered at Rutgers University during the professional phase of the program.

During their first two years, students take 60 credits, including the core requirements and required ancillary courses, at Saint Peter’s University. This course of study is followed by the professional phase of the program in which students take 61 credits at Rutgers. By May 1 of their sophomore year at Saint Peter’s University, students must apply to the School of Health Related Professions at Rutgers. To be accepted, students must be recommended by the Advisor of the Health Information Management Program, have completed all of the specified credits, have an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater, and satisfy all other admissions requirements of Rutgers. After acceptance at the School of Health Related Professions, which is decided solely by Rutgers, students begin their coursework at Rutgers during the summer after their sophomore year at Saint Peter’s.
