Study Abroad

Is Study Abroad for Me?

Why Study Abroad?

Studying abroad offers wide-ranging, long-lasting benefits that will enrich your college education immensely. When you study in another country, you will broaden your awareness of global issues, understand international independence, gain new perspectives on you academic majors, and—in some cases—develop proficiency in another language. Studying abroad allows you to engage firsthand with foreign cultures and learn how to interact with people from different backgrounds.

These skills are highly valuable in today’s global job market. You can also learn how international organizations function and better understand the economic and political issues that affect them.

Your time abroad is an ideal opportunity for self-reflection; assessment of your goals; and the further development of your confidence, maturity, and adaptability.

Who Can Study Abroad?

Students in good academic standing (usually with a 2.5 GPA or better) and who have completed their freshman year may enroll in a study abroad program. Students typically spend a semester or full academic year abroad. You can earn a maximum of 30 credits as a study abroad participant.

What Subjects Should I Study While Abroad?

First, review your degree audit; determine what subjects remain for you to complete. Discuss with your advisor your plans to take courses abroad. Look for foreign colleges and universities that offer the courses you wish to pursue.

Where in the World Should I Go?

When is the best time to study abroad?

There’s never a bad time to take your studies further afield, but some times are better than others. Consult your advisor and those who support your education. You may find a faculty-led trip lasting a week or two during January or Spring Break is your best option. Other programs last a semester or academic year and might suit your degree program.
